Sharepoint not displaying 'The attempted operation is prohibited because it exceeds the list view threshold' alert when list has more than 5000 items

I just noticed that when I try to view a SharePoint list with over 5000 items, I don't get a alert window saying "The attempted operation is prohibited because it exceeds the list view threshold". I can see the exception message in the debugger for both Edge and Chrome. It just doesn't show up as an alert. This happens in both Classic and Modern experience.

Does anybody else still get the alert message?

    Hi @Eric Shen
It is common that we could view 5000 items without an error. When the list view threshold limit is exceeded, you’ll find a warning message in list settings under “List View Threshold: The Number of items in this list exceeds the list view threshold, which is 5000 items.

Also, when you try to filter or sort column values, you’ll see “Cannot show the value of the filter. The field may not be filterable, or the number of items returned exceeds the list view threshold enforced by the administrator” message. So if we do not do the operation, there would not be an error.
