When trying to add a device account to a Surface Hub, I receive the error 'Unable to read Active Directory. The following error was encountered: 0x80131500.' The Hub is a V1 running Windows 10 Teams 20H2 and is up to date (currently has the 2022-09 cumulative update installed).

    Hello there,

Surface hub connects to the exchange using ActiveSync and device ID needs to be allowed. Also, while configuring, it has to be set as regular mailbox and convert it to room mailbox.

You can also try the Surface Hub Hardware Diagnostic tool contains interactive tests which allow you to confirm essential functionality of your Hub is working as expected. In addition to testing hardware, the diagnostic can test the resource account to verify that it is configured properly for your environment.

The below thread discusses the same issue and you can try out some troubleshooting steps from this and see if that helps you to sort the Issue.

Not sure if you got anywhere on this. I have just experience this with a customer as well and we are digging deep. The error appears to be completely account / environment related + the Surface Hub. In our case the same account worked fine on a Microsoft Teams Room and we can duplicate error whether on customer network or completely open network.

An account made on a different tenant though can work on the SUrface Hub being tested.

So again appears to be a combination of environment + Surface Hub - we are investigating exchange right as in this case it is a hybrid exchange environment.

But if you came up with an answer would love to hear it!
