Hi All,

I am new to SharePoint migration from On Prem to Online.

What are all the metrics or plan should I prepare before?

Could anyone share their SharePoint migration real time issues and resolutions?

Please do the needful.

Thanks
Suresh

    Hi @Suresh S ,
    Migration approach
    Phased versus cut-over
One of the initial decisions for an IT team tasked with migration is whether to carry out a phased migration and move the businesses data in batches over a period of time or whether to carry out the migration in one hit. No matter which choice is made, it should be based on the premise that normal work will not be affected.
Choose the migration strategy that best suits your organization and your strategic objective. Next, you should plan your pre-migration tasks.

    Consideration before migration
    First, Integrated applications:
If there are any other applications in your organization that integrate with your existing file server, you will need to check if these applications can integrate with SharePoint Online. If they are incompatible with SharePoint Online, then files related to those applications will need to remain on your current file server.Check for deprecated or added features on the target platform. Be prepared to modify your topology. For example, SharePoint 2010 workflows will not run on SharePoint Online.
    Second, Timescales:
File migration may last anywhere between a few days to a few weeks depending on the size of data to be migrated and complexity of the SharePoint setup. Consequently, this needs to be planned in advance.

    Migration Tool
It is recommended that you use Microsoft's official migration tool SPMT. For the specific usage method, please refer to here.
SPMT supports migration to SharePoint Online from SharePoint Server 2010, 2013, and 2016.

    Hi Haoyan,

Thank you for the detailed suggestions. I am about to migrate 2010 to Online.

I would like to know what kind of practical issues I will get in during the time of migration and after the migration.

Eg: How about the resources Ids will be after the migration between the existing and new system?

    Thanks
    Suresh

    Hi @Suresh S ,
Challenges faced during SharePoint Online Migration:
The speed of the migration will be affected if the internal servers are not configured properly/ if the internet speed is not meeting the required bandwidth, resulting in an increase of time for migration.
There will be a substantial loss of data respective to content types/columns, workflows and, web parts at the destination due to the lack of accounting of these factors at the source. Custom code may not migrate smoothly to SharePoint Online.
Deprecated templated and unresolved users will cause failed migrations if not paid attention to, at the source itself.
Hidden lists and libraries, preservation of item IDs, external lists and documents without proper versioning will also lead to unsuccessful migrations if not taken care of, right from the beginning.
For common issues and workarounds you may get in during the time of migration and after the migration, please refer to: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointmigration/troubleshooting-common-spmt-issues

    Hi,

Thank you for the input. During the migration, I am facing the below issue.

How to preserve the Document ID, Author and Date(Created, Modified) in the migration from on-prem to online? Please provide your thoughts in detail.

    Thanks
    Suresh

    Hi @Suresh S ,
I am thinking if you can try this(required extra work).Or you can directly use third-party tools to complete.
    Create several extra columns
then copy the values from orginal column to these columns.
Now move the files to destination and sharepoint will update OOTB column.
now you need to copy back data from temp to original.
