User stuck showing logging off Citrix session (FSLogix)

Has anyone else ran into an issue where a user is stuck logging off from a Citrix session with only 4 processes.

After some troubleshooting we notice its the fslogix service holding onto the hung sessions.

If we restart the service it releases the hung sessions.

Looking at the fsloglix logs it looks like the user is logged out and the vhd is dismounted.

1.if we create a new domain user ,will the same issue happen on this new user account ?

2.If we try to clean boot our issue server,will the same issue happen ?

So its very hard to replicate only happens randomly to a bunch of users. Once one user gets stuck tho its a chain reaction on that server.
These are sessions hosts for win 10 multi session machines.

It only has 4 or 5 services running for the user and it seems like the user is logged out. But Citrix seems the session still.
Have not tried a new user cause it does not happen all the time as its random but does happen quiet often.

2.when event id 4674 and 4634 log happen ,is there more related log information on issue session host before or after this fault time?

3.when the issue happen first happen ?did you install update before this issue happen or change anything recently ?

4.is your deployment in azure windows virtual desktop environment ?

Hi @Dlo ,

as i found myself in the same situation.
if you hard kill (after a long wait to login to the server) wsearch server is responding normal.
Maybe there is more to look for now at Microsofts end?

there is no logging from FSLogix (all is hanging at the log off)

For me this started all after the July 2022 patching from Server 2016 LTSB.

i'm testing this: (update it works for me!!)

As we're only experiencing problems after installing the July or later patch from Windows Server 2016.

Install below in the master image:

start on master image -> gpedit.msc (computer settings -> administrative -> KB501580 * -> disable)

Did anyone get a solution for this problem? I am having the exact same issue. About 12 users out of several hundred cannot seem to log off a VDI session without Windows 10 hanging. Using FSLogix on the desktop. I have tried deleting the profiles to have a new one created on login and it still happens to these users. Microsoft can't see to find a solution. I do have a ticket open with them.

I haven't figured out a root cause for it, but to kill the session without a reboot RDP into the server as and admin and open task manager, users tab, and expand the users carrot. Find the windows login application process for that user and right click and end task. You'll get a popup about it shutting down windows but it only does it for the stuck user so click the checkbox and go ahead and end it. The username will still show up on the list of users on the box, but director will show the user as no longer logged into the box and they can log back into a new session again. If I figure out why this happens I'll post it here. This happens both with and without fslogix installed btw.

generally i throw the box in maintenance mode after this and just let it reboot over night as I haven't found a reason yet.

These machines are AVD Windows 10 Single Session. I've tried everything from antivirus to you name it without a resolution. I have tried killing the process for the "stuck" users which ends up logging them out, but their profile is stuck open on the storage account. That in turn causes issues when they log back in as the VHDX files are currently in use on the Windows 10 VM they were previously on. I end up rebooting the VM's within the Azure portal.

I'm half tempted to try a traditional file server instead of a storage account. I don't have this problem with on premise Citrix with FSLogix profiles on traditional file servers.

Its still an issue on my end. I am currently trying a new image in case it was something I did in the Windows 10 optimizations.

I have a very similar problem with WIndows 2019 Citrix servers using FSLogix, which started around the same time maybe June. The problem is intermittent, maybe once a week and seems to be related to a user logging on or logging off. Some services on the server get stuck stopping or starting (usually IP Helper and AppX) and no new users can logon and current users can't logout. The only solution is to put the server into maintenance mode and reboot it after hours. The problem doesn't happen on our Windows 2012R2 Citrix servers, which has the same version of FSLogix. I've combed through the logs and can't find much to help work out the cause.

Little update from my end.
today i had a user stuck
decided ( yolo) to end this process winlogon.exe > frxsvc.exe thread 4586> frxsvc.exe thread 82624 > searchindexer.exe
after i done this the user started to logoff. ( forced logoff from taskmgmr)
no need to reboot the server anymore

Encountering the same issue.
glad i found this post.
Issue started after an windws update a month ago . ( removing update not possible in my case )
i am not using cirtrix but the faulty behavior is exactly the same

for wat i was able to test. winlogon exe hangs on the following processes ( note was not able to go further then searchindexer because the server crashed )
winlogon.exe > frxsvc.exe thread 4586> frxsvc.exe thread 82624 > searchindexer.exe

Did anyone try to go back to an older version of fslogix ?
