Mounting fileshare on Azure App Service container in Preview. When will it be in GA ?

In Azure App Service for container windows , we have the option of mounting FileShare , which is in Preview. When will this feature be in GA ?

Thank you for your interest in Storage Mount for App Service. Hopefully, the feature has been working out well for you. With regards to your question about when the feature will go GA, there's isn't a concrete time frame of when the transition to GA will occur. The team is targeting towards the end of this year; however, timelines and schedules can change so bear that in mind should it still be tagged with (Preview).

I have a express route connection from on-premises to Azure network via hub-and-spoke topology.

I have an on-premises website accessing a shared folder in my on-premises .
We want to move only the website to azure web app and everything else will remain on-premises

i want to mount that on-premises shared folder to my docker container and then host in Azure AppService Container . Is it possible ?
I saw the below link from Microsoft saying how to mount fileshare to windows container. Will it work for Azure Web Apps container ?

For my windows App Service container, when i try to mount path to windows location, it does not accept and gives below error.

Mount path must be a fully qualified path and can only include alphanumeric characters, underscores, hyphens, forward slashes, square brackets, and parenthesis

**

Please see below screenshot. How to map to c:\testdir of my windows container to Azure fileshare ?

That won't work @MS Techie . your mount path needs to use forward slashes, so in your case it would be /testdir. In which case your dockerfile or docker-compose will need a volume directive configured to /testdir.

Hi @MS Techie ,

The use of SMB mounts on Azure App Service are not supported. Please see https://github.com/projectkudu/kudu/wiki/Azure-Web-App-sandbox#restricted-outgoing-ports as SMB port 445 is restricted. The only options I can think of is either using Azure File Share Sync or crafting your own syncing through the REST APIs and/or SDK.

I have done the mapping as suggested by you , but I am not able to get the contents of the file from the mapped folder (using KUDU ) .i have mapped to azure fileshare and contents are there on the azurefileshare.
I am using windows appservice container. Please see below screenshot.
where am i going wrong ?

Hi @MS Techie ,

The contents won't be in the C:\ of the app service. You will need to check your /testdir container in your storage account. If you don't see the contents in your storage account, please provide your updated Dockerfile below.

i am doing the volume mount in my docker-compose.yml , not in dockerfile.

In Azure Web App container, i have created a mapping with name testdir , screenshot as shown in my earlier reply . i am trying to map the local path c:\testdir to testdir. My ASP website is inside a new folder c:\mywebsite , created from my dockerfile.

Below is my docker-compose.yml

dockerfile: Dockerfile

ports:

1) For my windows container in app service, should we map a folder from the azure file-storage to only a folder inside the c:\home directory of the App Service ?

2) Is the Mount Path option , path inside the container or is the path inside the azure file storage ?

3) Say , i have mapped c:\home\test folder , to the folder testdir inside of Azure FileShare , then will i be able to read & write to the folder testdir from inside the container. ?
i have not defined any WORKDIR in my dockerfile. my container is for ASP. (not asp.net)

Hi @MS Techie ,

It's the other way around. You want to map your Azure Storage container mount path to the path in your docker container. In your case, it would be:

volumes: - /testdir:/path/inside/container-image

However, if you were to use WORKDIR in your Dockerfile, you shouldn't need to declare the volume in your docker-compose.yml.

Hi @MS Techie ,

I did follow up with the PG team. The fix has been issued and is being rolled out. It's difficult to give an accurate timeframe but I would say between Christmas and the first half of January. Depending on which region you're in will affect how soon or late you'll see the rollout.

I am trying to make this work on windows server core container with asp.net core runtime installed. I followed the same instructions with no luck. I have dockerfile and not docker-compose, how to specify a volume directive that point to the created mount in the azure storage?

Hi @Anonymous , your mount path should simply match path you wish to mount inside your docker image. Can you provide some more info on your setup?

I am using a windows based plan (Premium v3). Hosting a core asp.net app.

I need to map an Azure File share to a folder in the containers for interoperability.

I am facing the same issue mentioned in this thread of not being able to specify a windows format URIs like C:\sharedfolder\ when creating the mount via the azure portal or via Azure CLI. Both complain about the folder format.

I tried to do mapping via docker volumes but windows plans do not support docker compose. So I tried to specify A VOLUME within the dockerfile pointing to the folder in the container that I want to be mapped. Something like this:

VOLUME C:\sharedfolder\

But with no luck, the file in the Azure file share was not found by my code.

My base image is mcr.microsoft.com/windows/servercore:ltsc2019, I tried also image mcr.microsoft.com/dotnet/core/aspnet:3.1.

My questions:
2. Should I use a special image base?
3. IS this feature supported in windows containers.

Answering my own questions: yes, I was able to map a drive to my app services using windows containers. I used a windows container image with powershell installed based on core server 2016.

Hi @Ryan Hill

You're talking about using Azure File Sync, I'm not sure about what do you mean.
Do you mean to install the azure file sync agent in the app service ?
We're actually using azure file sync to synchronize data from azure file share to different on prem servers, and since we want to migrate all apps to azure app services, we want to know if we can access the on prem files from azure app services using SMB. Because updating in azure file share will take 24 Hours to sync to onprem servers.
