How to properly connect to a data source with a UWP application?

I am new to UWP. In Winforms and WPF applications, I woudl use a table adapter to connect to a data source at design time? I was not able to find any information on the proper way to connect to a data source in a UWP application at design time. Please note that my data source is an SQL server on a local network. Thanks in advance.
