My laptop died a couple of years ago with a windows pro system I had attained by upgrading from a windows 7 pro.

    Hi,

According to your description, you may need to buy a new pro license.
When Windows 10 was first released, the offer for a free upgrade was available, but it ended on July 29, 2016.

    Hello,

If you've linked your digital license to your Microsoft account, it is saved as a record for your Microsoft account. However, the digital entitlement is valid of lifetime of your machine which is upgraded from Windows 7 to 10. If that machine dies, you'll need to buy new license of new machine, IMO.

    Regards.
