Windows Explorer slow and crashing. Not sure if it is the problem or a symptom

A few weeks ago my computer crashed when I tried to save a document, I had a few things running at the same time, can't remember all the details. Since then my computer has been very slow to get going after start up (I have very few apps running on start up). And windows explorer is very slow.

For instance, right clicking a file, the menu takes a long time to pop up. If I rename a file and hit enter it can take over 10 seconds to be saved. Over the last couple days the problems have increase, copying files between folders causes windows explore to crash. Libreoffice has stopped opening (I think it might be trying to recover the document that was open last time and can't do it). I make music and some of the plug ins are cause my DAW to crash wen I try to load them.

This is in some way releated to windows explore, because when I open or save an image in GIMP, I can use that programs file browser to navigate and create new folders with no lag or delay. If I try to make a new folder in the file browser that comes up when I click 'save as' in notepad I have to sit and wait for a long time. So because I can access files at a normal speed it seems (I hope) the problem is with windows and not my hard drive.

This problem persists with a second profile I logged in with, when I boot in safe mode, and I have used windows system file checker to scan and repair. I have done everything I can, and things that other people can, and they ended up advising me to ask here.

So, can anyone help?

Sounds like a file system problem. Try running these commands as admin:
    chkdsk /scan /f
    sfc /scannow

chkdsk will search for file system errors and bad sector disk errors
sfc confirms the integrity of the OS files

    @mrthingy
    Hi,
When Windows Explorer crashes, have you check the event viewer?
What error message will you see?
Looks like your system components are already corrupted, please run the
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
command to scan and repair the system components at first.
If reinstall Windows is acceptable, we could try to perform an in-place upgrade repair to refresh the machine. Unplug all the external devices and remove the security applications if you have any installed on your computer before upgrading. To isolate the third party service conflict issue, we could boot into a clean boot environment, then Download a Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft and boot from a it, choose "upgrade" install.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135
    Get Windows 10
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Hope above information can help you.

Look at the Event Viewer application error logs created immediately after such crash.

Do you experience the same ib Clean Boot State or in Safe Boot?
