Hi @ramesh singh ,

the first difference between an Azure Recovery Services Vault (ARSV) and an Azure Backup Vault (ABV) is are the available datasources of each vault.

If you create a new Vault in Azure Backup Center there is a screen that is showing the different available datasources of each vault type:

The second difference is: In an ARSV you can be used for Azure Backup and Azure Site Recovery data. An ABV is for Azure Backup data only.

There are many differences between Backup vaults and Recovery Services vaults in Azure. Backup vaults are the older versions. Recovery Services vaults are the current version. This is based on the Azure Service Manager model. This is based on the Azure Resource Manager model of Azure. These features are not available with Backup vaults.

I suspect that Backup Vaults are the legacy solution; they're obsolete, but long-term tenants might have large amounts of infrastructure and workflow around them that they can't easily move to Recovery Services Vaults. So RSV is the modern solution with more features that should be used for new setup, while BV is still supported for the sake of existing setup.

Hi Evan,
in truth, Backup Vault (BV) is not the legacy solution but it is complementary to Recovery Services Vault (RSV).

Some of the key differences are: BV supports some datasources that RSV does not support (Azure Blobs, Azure Disks, Azure Database for PostgreSQL servers); BV does not transfer data to vault storage for long term retention, it only works at snapshot level (you are only charged for the delta storage costs, not for backup storage).

You should use either BV or RSV depending on your datasources and in some cases you will use both.

I think the proper way that helped me understand the difference, is that Recovery Vaults were there first, to provide backup and recovery solution. Then came Azure Backup and the Backup Vault that addresses some new services.
