Hi all,

I am trying to integrate our on site Active Directory into Azure Active Directory. I am unable to run the Microsoft Azure Active Directory Connect without receiving the error message below. I'm currently running the service on Windows Server 2016. I've gone through all of the prerequisites for Azure AD Connect. I've included the log file generated when the service fails

@MeganNavitsky-5740, Thank you for these details. This might be an MSI engine issue. The problem is that AAD connect installation wizard is still detecting the ADsync service product code when in fact the service is not present anymore.

A few other things you can try:

    • use Revo UninstallerPro to fully remove the program and registry items, remove any folders related to Azure and then restart the Server and reinstall.
    • Step through all the Keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\ and look for one with Product Name Microsoft Azure AD Connect. Delete this and restart the installer.
    • Remove the following keys, if they exist: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\7EC08CB7BBBDF1045B31147D9AC698FB HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\E2D094C21044C254D9583B64140ED511

If you still are having this issue, feel free to reach out to me at AzCommunity@microsoft.com and send me your subcription ID, and I will open a one-time free support case for you.

Where is your AD Connect Server installed? Please make sure that this is not installed on the Primary Domain Controller, as this can cause this issue.

I would also recommend making sure that you have the latest version of AD Connect, as it was just released four days ago.

    Other things to check:

    • Ensure that the Run profile is configured correctly (Refer: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/connect/active-directory-aadconnectsync-configure-filtering#update-the-run-profiles)
    • Confirm whether the built-in administrators group on the server has the name "Administrators" or some other values?
    • Is the user account used to run the installation a member of local administrator group on the AD connect server?
    • Does the AAD connect account have "Log On as Service" permission on the AD connect server (Run rspo.msc and check Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy > Local Policy > User Rights Assignment > Log on as a service)
    • Is the source anchor attribute set to the default?

If you wish to start from scratch, one option is to push a new server to provision a new AD Connect on a fresh environment.

    Prerequisites for Azure AD Connect
Custom installation of Azure AD Connect
    Express Installation of Ad Connect

Let me know if any of these steps help. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread and can open a support case if needed.

I had this issue too after doing an inplace upgrade from Server 2012r2 to 2019 on a DC.
AD connect broke and I couldn't uninstall it completely.
I used Revo uninstall free to remove it completely then reinstalled the latest version.,

I would recommend a swing migration of the OS, not an in place upgrade, when moving from 12r2 to 19. Same thing for upgrading from older versions of AADConnect (1.5 and older) to 2.0.
