Restore 2012 R2 WSB Hyper-V VM onto different host.

Hi,

For various reasons I am being forced to use WSB to backup VM's on Server 2012 R2. I'm using an external USB HDD and the backups are running and I can test restore OK.

My issue is (having not really used WSB for VM backups before) that I'm not sure how I would carry out a restore onto a new host if required. I know that WSB gives the external drive a specific volume name and that I need to know what this is but what is the procedure to take that external drive from failed host, plug it into a new 2012 host and restore the VM's?

I've been looking and not really found a clear procedure to do this and what issues I may encounter. Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

    For windows server backup in external drive, if you connect to another host. The backup feature (WSB) in the new host should also recognize it. And when you choose restore, it should shows the backup version to restore.

    And in case of something wrong, you could also do a test in your environment.

    In addition, it is more recommended, if you need to restore to other host, the different host with the same hardware configuration.
