Exchange 2016 Hybrid with 2010

Hi

I think the answer to this question may be yes but I just hope someone can confirm.

We have installed a new Exchange 2016 server which will eventually fully replace an Exchange 2010 one. Most of the mailboxes have now been moved to the 2016 server. But we won't be in a position to fully decommission the 2010 server for a while, several weeks or maybe a couple of months.

We really want to have the facilities available of a hybrid environment - in particular the calendar option in Teams which we don't have at the moment and is a real chore for people to schedule meetings etc.

We already have AD Connect in place so our AD accounts are syncing to Azure AD. We will probably move our mailboxes to Exchange Online at some point but, again, not in the short term.

The question is - can we set up a Hybrid config while the Exchange 2010 server is still on premise ? Is the setup process different in this scenario ? And if we CAN do this, will decommissioning the 2010 server be more complicated with a hybrid setup in place ?

Thanks

Sure you can do that, when you run the HYbrid Wizard only pick the 2016 server as the hybrid endpoint.
You can then decommission the 2010 server anytime after you move all the mailboxes to 2016.

    @jarweb

In a coexist environment with Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2016, you need to use Exchange 2016 as internet facing server. So, switch DNS record from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2016, then rerun HCW to choose Exchange 2016 as hybrid server. After that, whether to uninstall and when to uninstall Exchange 2010 is not important.

Some steps need to be done:

    • Backup your current AD and Exchange 2010
    • Install the new Exchange 2016 and latest Cumulative Update.
    • Install latest Updates for the Exchange 2010 Service Packs and Roll-ups
    • Migrate On-prem mailboxes from Exchange 2010 to 2016
    • Rerun the Hybrid Configuration
    • Update your External Exchange URL (And Firewall Rules)
    • Test Email Flow.
    • Remove Exchange 2010
