Hi guys,
I am a system admin for a large UK charity and we are experiencing this for several of our servers and cannot find a solution. We are running Windows Server 2016 Std on a hyper V replicated environment.
Servers are intermittently failing the update with that error code which relates to permissions. But they even fail on .\Administrator so not sure if permissions is a red herring. I thought I had fixed it on last months update by recreating the admins local profile, but that doesn’t seem to work this time around.
Steps so far…

  1. delete software distribution
  2. Rename Catroot2
  3. Troubleshooter
  4. Bypass WSUS by installing standalone from catalog
  5. Recreate local profile using regedit
  6. Enable and Try default local admin account
We have about 4 servers with this same issue and do not have any clue why or how to resolve it.
Any suggestions on where to look or where to post this question would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi @Simon Manning

Bypass WSUS by installing standalone from catalog

Did we mean the update is installed manually on the side of clients, but it fails? Is it right? If so, it seems that there are nothing with WSUS. Could we show the screenshot about the failed error? Please erase private information.

    Hi Amanda,

Sorry for late response, I have been on holiday.

I managed to get the updates to work through multiple attempts to install but I am still unsure why they worked. I will be installing this months updates at the weekend and will confirm if this was a once off or not.

with regards to WSUS, Yes the update was downloaded on the client server and installed "offline" and still fails with the same error.

I dont have a screenshot of this as it has now been successful, but will update after the weekend to confirm if the new patches have the same issue.

    Kind regards

    Simon
