Hot, Cool and Archive Tier

All,

When we create a storage account, we start off with a default container which constitutes the hot tier. I'm aware of Access Tier that I can set while creating storage account. I'm also aware of the LifeCycle Management menu that I can utilize to move files across the Cool and Archive tier and eventually delete them based on certain criteria.

My question is, how does Azure manage moving the files to different tiers when we dont create any additional containers/storage accounts for Cool and Archive Tier?

I would understand if we were required to create a Storage Account for the Cool Tier and another Storage Account for the Archive Tier but that is not the case.

Thanks,
Gopi

    Hi @grajee

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Platform .

To provide you more context :
Azure will maintain 3 copies of data at the backend for your account
One is primary , Second is active secondary and the third is standalone .

When ever you apply the lifecycle of a blob to move to cold in 30 days and then archive to 45 days ,
Azure will first move the data to only Secondary and standalone and then to standalone. only .

All of this is completely managed by Azure and hence there is no need to create extra storage accounts from customer stand point of view.

Please do accept the answer if it answers your question.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Pradeep
