I am trying to use the Android emulator. I have been using my Phone connected by cord but this is not a great way to debug. So I go to Device Manager (VS 2022) and create the default (Pixel 5). It then shows. All attempts to deploy to the emulator using VS fail. Why does it fail? No idea since it says it failed but I get no information about why. I go to the documentation but that is for VS 2019 not 2022. And not for Win 11 so I have no idea what could be happening. Any ideas?

Hi Do you have an Intel or AMD CPU ? as that line; Running non-accelerated point to me an AMD CPU, or the HAXM is not installed correctly. Running not accelerated will not work good. I have a dev machine on AMD, and some physical device to test on it as the emulator run too slow to actually debug on it. If your Windows build accept it, please enable HyperV, you can use that way to have accelerated mode at On. Ok HAXM was not installed so I installed it. Still does not work.

My processor info:

Now it seems that I need the Android SDK. SO I go to the page that is supposed to tell me how to do that. Like too many links these days it sends me to a page that tells me ..... oh wait their instructions cannot be followed so at the present I am lost.

Visual Studio installed the Android SDK for you - the Android Emulator is part of the Android SDK, and you wouldn't have the Android Emulator at all without the SDK.

Android (and other) emulators are very slow if they aren't running with hardware acceleration, and the attempt to launch and connect to the non-accelerated emulator is likely timing out because of that. By the time it starts responding the build has already given up on it.

To run accelerated you will need to be directly on system hardware (not in a Windows VM) and enable Hyper-V or HAXM, depending on what your system (Hardware + OS)_supports and has enabled.

These will walk you through the Android SDK command line tools to confirm what virtualization technologies area available and enabled on your system.

Rob, the Android SDK was not installed with VS 2019 or 2022. I kinda have the emulator working after I installed the Android Studio. During the install it said that HAXM was not installed but when I run the command prompt to see it is running.

Since I am unfortunately on Win 11 all the docs for Hyper-V are for win 10 so that part I have not been able to do.

Xamarin needs better documentation and better install or when you ask to create an emulator there should be some information given that actually does install the SDK and tells what other things need to be done..

You wouldn't get as far as you have if you didn't have the Android SDK and emulator installed - whether they were installed by VS or you installed them separately and pointed VS at them, VS doesn't build Android apps without the SDK.

As yagmoth555 points out, the error you're getting is that the emulator is running unaccelerated. Without hardware acceleration, emulators are generally unusably slow.

The documentation I linked walks you through enabling and troubleshooting hardware acceleration, assuming that you have a system that supports it. If you've gone through those and still need help then I recommend opening a support case and somebody can work this out with you one on one.

There aren't any significant differences in enabling or troubleshooting hardware acceleration between Windows 10 and Windows 11 or between VS 2019 and VS 2022. The Windows 10 references there are to minimum versions. If you are on Windows 11 then you meet the minimum requirements of Windows 10 April 2018 update (build 1803) or later.

Also note that several of the key pieces here (i.e the Android SDK, emulator, and tools and Intel's HAXM tools) are third party products and not directly tied to Microsoft versions.

Ok further details. Emulator started working after I installed Android Studio. The SDK is not installed with VS 2022 and it's install was 2 step, 1st install was Visual Studio, the 2nd part was to install those pieces needed to use Xamarin. I might have thought that the second part might have installed the Android SDK but it didn't.

I used your link to see how my system and hardware acceleration worked together. It told me to disable Hyper-V. I did as they showed and the emulator still executes but there is no difference that I can see in the debugging after.

I know that the SDK etc. are not MS products but since they are required to debug (using an emulator) I would have thought that this might have at least be mentioned during Xamarin install.

Since I now have it working, thanks for your help. The emulator works but unfortunately Hot Reload does not although it says it is running and is connected to the emulator. But that is for another day.
