'VMCustomization' is not enabled for the Subscription. Error trying to create vm from command line

It is recommended to use parameter "--public-ip-sku Standard" to create new VM with Standard public IP. Please note that the default public IP used for VM creation will be changed from Basic to Standard in the future.

I'm unable to find anything about VMCustomizationPreview in azure. What does this mean? how to Fix?

Just to confirm, this is what you are using for the command line?

az vm create --resource-group "psdemo-rg" --name "psdemo-win-cli" --image "win2019datacenter" --admin-username "demoadmin" --admin-password

VM Customization is in Private Preview and it doesn't sound like that's what you are trying to use.

Yes, that was copy/pasted from the command line window (minus the password that I snipped out.) I'm not interested in the preview features, this is just a plain vm.

Try the following and let me know if you run into any issues. I was able to reproduce the first half of your response and that may be contributing to the second half as well (you will be prompted to create a password):

az vm create --resource-group "psdemo-rg" --name "psdemo-win-cli" --image "win2019datacenter" --public-ip-sku Standard --admin-username "demoadmin"

Adding the --public-ip-sku Standard does not make any difference, same error, if that's what you are suggesting.

Resolution: This appears to be an issue with the Azure CLI with the release of 2.33.0 (thank you @Jay for bringing this to our attention).

A hotfix was deployed on 2/14

You can use az upgrade to upgrade your CLI to version 2.33.1 to resolve this issue.

The Azure Cloud Shell update has completed and it is now running 2.33.1 as of 3pm PST on 2/18 (this should mean that Azure Learn modules are now unblocked).

Error: 'VMCustomization' is not enabled for the Subscription
Attempting to use az vm create with Azure CLI version 2.33.0 will result in the following error:

'VMCustomization' is not enabled for the Subscription. Please register the Subscription for 'Microsoft.Compute/VMCustomizationPreview' to use the feature.

Same result. Apprently this is a cli bug, I also reported on github, and they made a patch to be released in future:

Perhaps you are not seeing because you are not on windows, or on an old version of cli

You are correct--I was on 2.32.0. After updating to 2.33.0 I'm seeing the same thing. I'll follow up on my end as this appears to be a bug. Thank you for reporting this!

This also affects the learn module for configuring a security access group, when trying to downgrade following the steps given the following error appears

E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend - open (13: Permission denied) E: Unable to acquire the dpkg frontend lock (/var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend), are you root?

Which means that the learn module is currently unusable. Can someone comment on if this will be downgraded so that the learn module can be used before the expected fic on March 1st? I'm preparing to take the certification and being held up by three weeks due to the train system being none functional throws the planning of this training off.

No problem, the url is https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/learn/modules/secure-network-connectivity-azure/6-configure-access-network-security-group and the error happens on the first stage Create a Linux virtual machine and install Nginx step 1 From Cloud Shell, run the following az vm create command to create a Linux VM:

running the script given results in the same error

az vm create \ --resource-group [sandbox resource group name] \ --name my-vm \ --image UbuntuLTS \ --admin-username azureuser \ --generate-ssh-keys

This is now resolved for MS Learn Module

One your Active Sandbox Try Running

Install-Module -Name Az.Compute -RequiredVersion 4.24.1

OR

Install-Module -Name Az.Compute -RequiredVersion 4.25

Then

Pwsh

That starts a new powershell session

New-AzVm -ResourceGroupName learn-d2a8d1e3-0259-4d64-a7ec-8348a719b240 -Name "testvm-eus-01" -Credential (Get-Credential) -Location "East US" -Image UbuntuLTS -OpenPorts 22 -PublicIpAddressName "testvm-01"

will work successfully now!

The Azure Cloud Shell was running Azure CLI version 2.32.0 yesterday but it seems that has been updated to 2.33.0. I'll remove that from the list of workarounds as I'm not aware of a way to downgrade the Azure Cloud Shell CLI version.

So while it can be done with az cli installed on a laptop, cloud shell is much easier :D

@Phil Georgiou , updating to 2.33.1 will resolve this issue however the Azure Cloud Shell takes a while to update and I haven't seen an update for that yet. I'm continuing to follow the status of the Azure Cloud Shell and Azure Learn modules today.

We are in the process of upgrading the Azure Cloud Shell (you won't be able to do this yourself). The process has been started and should hopefully complete soon. I'll keep monitoring the progress on this. You can use the Azure CLI locally on your computer if you need to, however:
