Remote Desktop Connection to Azure VM terminates after connecting to VPN

I installed FortiClient VPN on my Azure VM. As soon as I connect the VPN, my Remote Desktop connection gets terminates and I can no longer reach it unless I restart the VM. I am thinking it overwrote my routing or something similar. Is there a way differentiate the connection in someway? To tell the VM once this VPN is connected then the RDP should not be broken. Anyone ever faced anything similar? Any fixes?

I've been doing some research and it looks like there may be a specific workaround required for FortiClient. I'm doing some additional digging and I'll let you know what I come up with.

2022-03-05T21:00:03.583+00:00 It appears that FortiClient VPN may have some extra steps for a variety of cloud environments. These are a couple issues and solutions I've found related to Azure:
- FortiClient VPN Connection Issue on Windows Server 2019 #Azure VM (azurementor) - Solution here is to add the VPN IP address to trusted sites.
- Can't Ping or RDP Azure VM using site to site connection (fortinet) - Packet level analysis.
- Using RDP with Forticlient VPN (reddit) and RDP disconnection issue when VPN is connected - Known issue with a specific version number (6.0.x and 6.2.2) that closed connections to RDP servers with sessions that had authentication.
- RDP through VPN SSL doesn't work anymore (fortinet) - FortiOS upgrade to 5.2.2.

2022-03-05T21:38:04.91+00:00 Thanks @Anonymous many thanks for the resources but it doesn't cover what I was asking completely. Yes Fortinet Client was an issue but it is the same for other VPNs. Let's use Checkpoint as an example also. In some cases it works but for some client's configuration it will fail. Once I click on "Connect," the RDP connection to the Azure VM drops and I am unable to reestablish a connection. The only way to get back to the VM is to either restart it, try RDP troubleshooting or worse case scenario which has happened, I have to detach the disk, uninstall the respective VPN client, reattach the disk and then I am able to RDP once more. I have read something awhile back about split tunneling. This would basically have a specific route which the VPN will not interfere with. Is this feasible?
