Add watermarks to content generated or altered by using AI in Microsoft 365

To help provide additional transparency about what content has been generated or altered by using AI in Microsoft 365, watermarks can be added to videos and audio content. A policy setting controls your organization’s ability to add a visual or audio watermark to video and audio content that your users generate or alter by using AI in Microsoft 365.

Starting in the second half of February 2026, visual or audio watermarks can be added to video and audio content that your users generate or alter by using AI in Microsoft 365. You need to enable a policy setting for watermarks to be added to video and audio content. Your organization is always responsible for following the Microsoft Enterprise AI Services Code of Conduct, including not generating or sharing deceptive AI content.

Here are two examples:

  • A visual watermark is added to a video generated with Clipchamp.
  • An audio watermark is added to an audio overview generated by Copilot from a Word document.

You can’t customize the placement or the wording of the watermark.

Even if you decide to keep these watermarks turned off, additional info is added to the metadata of the video and audio content that your users generate or alter by using AI in Microsoft 365.

For information about images, see Watermarks for images.

To turn on watermarks by using Cloud Policy

To turn on watermarks for video and audio content that your users generate or alter by using AI in Microsoft 365, you need to use the "Include a watermark when content from Microsoft 365 is generated or altered by AI" policy. This policy is available only in Cloud Policy service for Microsoft 365.

Note

  • We anticipate that this policy will be available in Cloud Policy in the second half of February 2026.
  • This policy isn’t available to United States government customers using Microsoft 365 (or Office 365) Government Community Cloud (GCC), GCC High, or DoD offerings.

If you want to add a watermark to video and audio content, you need to set this policy to Enabled. If you set this policy to Disabled or Not configured, a visual or audio watermark isn’t added. This policy doesn’t apply to images.

Regardless of how you configure this policy, additional info is added to the metadata of video and audio content that your users generate or alter by using AI in Microsoft 365.

Watermarks for images

The "Include a watermark when content from Microsoft 365 is generated or altered by AI" policy doesn’t apply to images. Instead, your users will be able to turn on watermarks for images by going to Settings & Privacy > Privacy at https://myaccount.microsoft.com. We anticipate this capability will be available in the second half of February 2026.

Note

  • If you don’t want your users to be able to generate images by using AI in Microsoft 365, you can set the "Control access to Designer Image Generation" policy to Enabled in Cloud Policy.
  • This policy affects Microsoft Designer and image generation capabilities in Microsoft 365 apps, such as Word and PowerPoint, that make use of Designer’s capabilities.

If your users decide to turn on watermarks for images, any new image they generate or existing images they alter by using AI in Microsoft 365 will have a visual watermark added. For example, when they use Microsoft Designer or the image generation capabilities in Word or PowerPoint.

Even if your users don’t turn on watermarks for images, additional info is added to the metadata of images that your users generate or alter by using AI in Microsoft 365.

Additional information added to the metadata of content that’s generated or altered by AI in Microsoft 365

Even if you don’t turn on watermarks, additional info is added to the metadata of video and audio content that your users generate or alter by using AI in Microsoft 365. Additional info is also added to the metadata of images that your users generate or alter by using AI in Microsoft 365.

Note

Currently, this additional info is added only to the metadata of images. We’re working on getting the info added to video and audio content, but we don’t have a specific time frame for when that will happen.

For example, the additional info added to the metadata of the content might include which AI model was used, which app generated the content, or when the content was generated. For more information, see the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) website.
