DirectX12 extremly bad performance when enabling any overlay

For about a week now I can't play any DX12 games in Fullscreen or borderless mode when having any overlay enabled (e.g. Xbox GameBar, RivaTuner). When I try to, my graphics card usage drops to 15% and my fps go down to about 10. It all runs fine in everything but DX12, in a window or without any overlay enabled. Only when these 3 criteria are met this bug occurs. I think this started after my graphics card crashed on undervolting it to aggressively. My current Windows 11 installation is about 1 month old now.

What I've tried so far:

  • Un- and reinstall graphics driver (with DDU)
  • Try Beta version of graphics driver

Specs:

  • CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
  • GPU: AMD RX580 (8GB)
  • MB: MSI B450M Pro-VDH Max
  • RAM: 2*8GB Corsair 3200MHz

I'm open for any ideas

I don't understand this anymore. I uninstalled my radeon driver 2 times yesterday to no avail. I shutdown the PC, turned it back on today and the problem is solved without me changing anything. This isn't the first time I troubleshoot for hours and lastly the problem fixes itself after the PC is turned of for the night. I don't want to talk to soon because the problem might return (wouldn't be the first time). I start my PC in the morning and almost know I can't play a game without having any sort of problems. I can't seem to find what the issue is as I can run memory stress tests or prime95 for hours without any system instability. Does anyone have an idea why I'm having these problems? I believe it started after upgrading to Windows 11 but of all my friends running 11, I seem to be the only one with these kinds of problems

Hi PW. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

    1. Try these fixes for DirectX instability due to overlays:

    1. The Display driver is so important here that merely updating it is sometimes not enough. So let's try everything possible to get it working correctly:

First make sure you have updated the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

Remove the old driver using DDU https://www.wagnardsoft.com/content/ddu-guide-t... if necessary installing in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://winaero.com/how-to-boot-windows-11-in-s...

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support...

or the Nvidia GeForce scanner here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e...

or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver. You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

Then expedite all WIndows Updates including Optional to see if it pushes Monitor or other enabling drivers.

Check for a monitor driver by expediting Windows Updates (including Optional Updates) in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for Updates to install all Updates until no more are offered.

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
