So while I was off at TechEd New Zealand and TechEd Australia (having a great time!) we had our big virtualization launch event - so now that I am back I thought I had better (belatedly) post the important information:
Microsoft Hyper-V Server, a stand alone version of Hyper-V (minus all the usual Windows capabilities), will be available for free by early October.
- More details are here: https://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2007/nov07/11-12HyperVPR.mspx
System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 will also be available by early October (but not for free).
- More details are here: https://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/virtualmachinemanager/en/us/default.aspx
And finally, Live Migration is coming:
Cheers,
Ben

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm familiar only with Virtual PC: will the "free" Hyper-V Server be manageable -- once properly configured -- from within one of its own virtual machines?Anonymous

Wow, this is amazing news. Essentially you are giving away Windows Server 2008 Server Core with only Hyper-V role. I can't wait to get this on my testing servers.Anonymous

Jim, No, you can't run Hyper-V inside Hyper-V.Anonymous

Any chance that a DOS VM will run in Hyper-V stand alone server ? I am assuming that it is a upgrade from Virtual Server.
