Performing Distributed Transactions with Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT

Applies To: Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server Technical Preview, Windows Vista

The DTC message protocol, which was introduced with Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, supports limited interoperability with the older protocol that is found on Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 3.51 systems. You can use the DTC message protocol on a Windows NT 4.0 system if you have installed Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 or later. A DTC transaction can be propagated from a system that uses the DTC protocol to a system that uses the older protocol, but not vice versa. For example, a component in a COM+ application running on Windows XP can invoke a Microsoft SQL Server database running on Windows 98. However, an MTS component running on Windows NT 3.51 cannot invoke a SQL Server database running on Windows 2000 Server.
