Quantity Explosion of BOM (report)

The Quantity Explosion of BOM report shows a fully exploded, indented listing of a production BOM for the item or items you specify. It calculates and lists every component level of the BOM, including nested production BOMs, and shows each component's number, description, quantity, unit of measure, and the total quantity required, all as of the calculation date you select.

You can filter the report by item No., Search Description, and Inventory Posting Group to limit the run to specific items or groups of items, and the report includes only items that have a production BOM assigned. Set the Calculation Date on the request page to determine which BOM version and validity dates (starting and ending dates) the program uses when it calculates component quantities.

Use cases

Use the report when a production planner or manufacturing manager needs to see the fully exploded, indented BOM structure for one or more items as of a chosen calculation date to determine component quantities required at every level.

Production planners and manufacturing managers can use the report to:

  • Review the fully exploded, multilevel component structure of an item's production BOM before releasing a production order.

  • Determine the total quantity of each component required to produce a given quantity of the parent item.

  • Check which BOM version and component validity dates apply as of a chosen calculation date.

  • Identify nested production BOMs and confirm they're active (not closed) before relying on the calculated quantities. Controllers and finance teams can use the report to:

  • Use the calculated component quantities to validate standard cost roll-ups for manufactured items.

  • Export the exploded BOM data to Excel for further quantity and cost analysis.

  • Confirm unit of measure conversions are applied correctly across BOM levels before quantities are used in reporting.
