When you sell items, Business Central calculates the emissions for each item line. The calculation depends on the Carbon Tracking Method on the Item Card page:
- For Average, the sales line uses the average CO2e per Unit from the item.
- For Specific, the sales line uses the CO2e from the inbound item ledger entries that the sale applies to. For a lot-tracked item, assign the lot on the sales line. The selected lot determines the CO2e that Business Central posts. The posted actual CO2e is an emission reduction because the item leaves inventory.
When you post all sales documents, the posted documents keep the CO2e per Unit and Total CO2e values for each line.
The result of posting shows as a new sustainability value entry for each line that has Sale as its Item Ledger Entry Type.
You can also track emissions when you sell a fixed asset. The sales line gets the default sustainability account from the fixed asset. Its Total CO2e comes from the asset's acquisition entries for the selected depreciation book. Learn more in Track fixed asset emissions in the sustainability value chain.
When you copy a posted sales invoice for an item that uses Specific, Business Central calculates the copied Total CO2e from the item ledger entries for the posted invoice. This behavior keeps the copied values aligned with the item entries that supplied the original sale.

You can find Sales Quote and Sales Invoice layouts with embedded sustainability information, enabling you to include carbon‑footprint information directly on these documents. These Word-layouts extend existing invoice and quote templates by adding CO₂e information per unit and a total emissions line.
The following list sales documents and layouts are related to carbon footprint:
Sales Invoice
- Standard ESG Sales Invoice (Word)
- Standard ESG Sales Invoice – Blue (Word)
Sales Quote
- Standard ESG Sales Quote (Word)
- Standard ESG Sales Quote – Blue (Word)
Each layout is based on the corresponding standard template and include sustainability fields. These fields allow you to provide transparent emissions information on quotes (presales) and invoices (post‑sales) to ensure consistency between commercial documents and sustainability reporting. The layouts work with existing CO₂e values calculated using value chain operations from the Sustainability module and require no other customization.
