Microsoft Defender for Identity SIEM log reference
Defender for Identity can forward security alert and health alert events to your SIEM. Alerts and events are in the CEF format. This reference article provides samples of the logs sent to your SIEM.
Note
We recommend using the streaming API or REST APIs to Integrate your SIEM tools with Microsoft Defender XDR. This approach enables you to forward all events and alerts from all Defender XDR products, rather than just the Defender for Identity events and alerts.
Sample Defender for Identity security alerts in CEF format
The following fields and their values are forwarded to your SIEM:
Detail | Explanation |
---|---|
start | Time the alert started |
suser | Account (usually the user account) involved in the alert |
shost | Account (usually the machine account) involved in the alert |
outcome | When relevant, success or failure of the suspicious activity in the alert |
msg | Description of the alert |
cnt | For alerts that have a count of the number of times the activity happened (for example, brute force has an amount of guessed passwords) |
app | Protocol used in this alert |
externalId | Event ID Defender for Identity writes to the event log that corresponds to each type of alert. |
cs#label | Customer strings allowed by CEF, where cs#label is the name of the new field |
cs# | Customer strings allowed by CEF, where cs# is the value. |
For example:
cs1Label=url cs1=https\://security.microsoft.com/alerts/aa5909ae198ca1ec04d05e65fa
The cs1 field is the alert URL.For example:
cs2Label=trigger cs2=new
The cs2 field identifies if the alert is new or updated.For example:
cs3Label=shostfqdn cs3=client1.contoso.com
The cs3 field identifies the fully qualified domain name of the source computer name.
Note
If you plan to create automation or scripts for Defender for Identity SIEM logs, we recommend using the externalId field to identify the alert type instead of using the alert name for this purpose. Alert names may occasionally be modified, while the externalId of each alert is permanent. For a list of external IDs, see Security alert name mapping and unique external IDs.
Sample logs
The log examples comply with RFC 5424, but Defender for Identity also supports RFC 3164.
Note
The list below is a sample of logs sent to a SIEM. For a full list of alert details, see Security alert name mapping and unique external IDs.
