I am the author of the document.

Word online in SharePoint, I made the document read only by steps

1 Select File, Info

2 Select Protect Document, select Always Open Read Only

Closed the file.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/make-a-document-read-only-5c25909c-46d9-4eb0-9d1f-d072a560e340

Tested and works. Users can only View the file. To Edit the file, they must Save As, or Download a copy.

If I want to remove protection ..

I go back in the document to remove protection. It does not allow me.

1 Select File, Info.

2 Select Protect Document, no options to Unprotect document.

On Review ribbon, Protect there is no Stop Restriction button

How do I remove Read Only once I applied

TIA

    Hi @dd88

If you open this document via Word desktop app, is there any error message prompted up? Such as: Unknown error trying to lock file?

Please open this document via Word online, check whether the 'Protect Document' option has gray shading, is so, you can click it again to remove the view-only setting.

Besides, I suggest you check whether you can choose 'Editing' mode for this document.
