Cannot cancel or pay final bill on Azure subscription

I tried to pull the plug on a dead project sitting on Azure for months. I went up to the resources list and started canceling everything - VMs, databases etc. Under subscriptions I still have an active Azure subscription listed. When I cancel that one it says my subscription is canceled it will take 10 minutes to update. This has been the case for weeks. For those past weeks I keep getting an email from MS asking for past due payments on that subscription "We’re unable to renew your subscription; please update your payment method". When I follow the link "Update Payment Method" it takes me to a screen with past office subscriptions, not Azure. When I switch to Azure console manually, I still see the Azure subscription showing as "active". When I go in the details I see a red warning on top saying "This subscription will be disabled for non-payment. Settle outstanding charges." Following that link takes me to a screen that says "We are unable to find an active payment method for this subscription. Please try again later or contact Azure support." I cannot contact Azure support since I am not on a paid support plan, however I still have a saved credit card under Billing >Payment Methods. I just want to get rid of this subscription and move on. Can I just ignore it?

Hello @Deniz Thank you for reaching out to us on Microsoft Q&A platform. Sorry for the delayed response!

From the information you provided, I understand that you are facing issues cancelling your subscription and paying the final bill. However, in the comment you mentioned that the card was not set to default. After setting it to default the payment was done automatically and you cancelled the subscription. Thanks for sharing your experience.

If you have already disabled Azure subscription and want to remove credit card payment method, wait until the end of the billing period so charges are correctly calculated by Azure, then you will be able to delete your credit card without problems.

As Azure subscription is already canceled you won't get any additional charges.

You can remove credit card from Azure subscription Pay-as-you-go by using following steps:

    • Sign into the Azure portal at https://portal.azure.com/.
    • Navigate to Cost Management + Billing. In the left menu list under Billing, select Payment methods.
    • In the Payment methods area, on the row that the payment method is on, select the ellipsis (...) symbol and then select Delete.

    • In the Delete a payment method area, select Delete if all conditions are met. If Delete is unavailable, continue to the next step.
    • Select the link shown in the Delete a payment method area.

    • When you select the corrective action link, you're redirected to the Azure page where you take action. Take whatever correction action is needed. If necessary, complete all other corrective actions.
    • Navigate back to Cost Management + Billing > Billing profiles > Payment methods and delete the payment method.
