Hi,

I have a Legion 7 15IMHg05 (4 years old) and have been facing frequent crashes with or without BSOD for the past 2 months on my Windows 10 laptop, usually when I'm running youtube or mundane Word/Powerpoint tasks, never during gaming. I have tried dism and sfc scan now and fix approaches but these didn't work. The only solution that worked for me was resetting my PC. These resets would usually be fine for several days before they return with crashes again. In my latest reset, I disabled Windows update, thinking it could be the updates that were causing my crashes. For as long as I disabled Windows update, I've not had any crashes up to more than a week. However, I've noticed when Windows forced an update yesterday (23rd July 2024), the crashes returned immediately the day after.

These two updates were KB5011048 and KB5039884. I've tried uninstalling the updates but the crashes persist until I had to reset my PC again and its working fine so far. The error logs I saw immediately after these crashes for the past few weeks were DPTF (Event ID: 17) and TPM-WMI (Event ID: 1796). I've tried installing the latest driver update for DPTF, but it did not work. Only resetting the PC works.

Below are info on it:

The Secure Boot update failed to update a Secure Boot variable with error Secure Boot is not enabled on this machine.. For more information, please see https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2169931

It would be great if you can help diagnose the problem, or tell me how to stop the two Windows updates listed above that were giving me troubles. I'm currently delaying Windows update for up to 1 month using the Pause update function and trying to see if it works.

Thank you.

    Hello,

    Diagnosing the Problem

    DPTF (Event ID: 17):

This error is related to the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework (DPTF). It seems like the DPTF driver might be causing issues. Since updating the driver didn’t help, it might be worth trying to reinstall the driver completely. You can download the latest DPTF driver from the Lenovo support site or Intel’s official site.

    TPM-WMI (Event ID: 1796):

This error indicates an issue with the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and Secure Boot. Ensure that Secure Boot is enabled in your BIOS settings. If it’s already enabled, try updating your BIOS to the latest version available from Lenovo’s support site.

    Preventing Problematic Updates

To stop Windows from automatically installing the problematic updates (KB5011048 and KB5039884), you can use the “Show or Hide Updates” troubleshooter tool from Microsoft. Here’s how:

Download the “Show or Hide Updates” troubleshooter:

You can download it from the Microsoft Support site.

    Run the troubleshooter:

Open the tool and follow the prompts to hide the updates KB5011048 and KB5039884. This will prevent Windows from installing these updates automatically.

    Additional Steps

    Reset Windows Update Components:

Sometimes, resetting the Windows Update components can help resolve persistent update issues.

    Clean Boot:

Perform a clean boot to see if there are any software conflicts causing the crashes. This can help identify if a third-party application is interfering with the updates.
