When trying to run a manuall assessment (check for updates) on two of our Windows Server 2022 VMs, we are receiving the error:
"Provisioning of VM extension WindowsPatchExtension has timed out. Extension provisioning has taken too long to complete. The extension did not report a message. More information on troubleshooting is available at https://aka.ms/vmextensionwindowstroubleshoot The operation did not return a response and should be retried. This result may be incomplete."
After rebooting the error disappears but pops up again after retrying a few hours later.

Open a web browser on each VM and visit a site like www.microsoft.com to ensure they have internet access.
Log into each VM, type services.msc in the Run dialog, and check that the "Windows Update" service is running.
In the Azure portal, navigate to your VM and check the logs for the WindowsPatchExtension under Extensions + applications to identify any specific errors.
Ensure the WindowsPatchExtension is up to date by clicking on Extensions + applications in the Azure portal and selecting the option to update or reinstall it.
Attempt to run Windows Update manually on each VM by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
Verify that your VMs have sufficient CPU and memory; if they are under-resourced, consider resizing them to a larger instance.
After completing these steps, retry the update process from the Azure portal.
