I don't want every window of an app to open the same size

I open docs multiple times throughout the day. Doc A opens, I adjust height/width of window to the way I want it, great. While that's open, I open Doc B. I don't want Doc B to be the same size as Doc A. How do I stop it from doing that (without adjusting it every. single. time.) And I'm not looking to use the Snapping feature. Thanks (I have Windows 11 and use Office 16. I'm asking this as it relates to Word and Excel)

It sounds like you want different windows of the same app to open with distinct sizes. Unfortunately, most applications don’t inherently remember window sizes for individual documents. However, there are a few workarounds you can try:

    Third-Party Window Management Tools:

Consider using third-party window management tools that allow you to save and restore window sizes and positions. These tools often provide more granular control over window behavior.

Examples include “DisplayFusion” (for Windows) or “Magnet” (for macOS).

    Scripting or Macros:

If you’re comfortable with scripting or macros, you could create a custom solution.

For instance, you might write a script that detects when a specific document opens and automatically adjusts its window size.

Remember that the effectiveness of these solutions may vary depending on the specific app you’re using.

    Hi Amy,

Thanks for your post. Regarding the default window size, if you want to change the view for the new documents, you may need to modify the template on which these documents are based. For a blank document, it will be the default template i.e. Normal.dotm. With this, you can try to change the Normal.dotm and follow the below steps: Kindly Open the Word application> File> Open> Browse> Go to the following path C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates> Select Normal.dotm and open it> Make sure the Zoom level is 100 and View is in Print Layout> Save the Normal.dotm> Open the new document and check the behavior.

Regarding turning off Snap windows in Windows 11 via Settings App, you can do the following steps:

    1. Open the Settings app. Choose the System category in the left column and then click Multitasking on the right side.
    2. Toggle the switch next to “Snap windows” from on to off. It will immediately disable the Snap windows feature in Windows 11.

    Best Regards,

    Ian Xue
