100% disk usage problems with Microsoft Edge

I have been getting lately 100 percent disk usage issues since the Edge browser was installed.

Is anyone else noticing it.  Or is it just general microsoft incompetence?

Just spent 30 minutes dealing with a computer freezing up intermittently, had to shut everything down and then all sorts of microsoft software things needed to tie up my hard drive for 5 minutes.

I have a Samsung S20 Ultra with Android operating systme and it always works and works well. I have a laptop with Windows 10 and it is always something. If they had a large screen android system with a large keyboard I would probably drop Windows entirely.

I am tired of their excuses I am tired of their problems. They are the Yahoo of the operating system world.

I have experienced two different computers with this issue in the last week.  One was a customer's computer (Lenovo 4th Gen Core i5, 8GB RAM, 500GB Spindle Drive, Win 10 feature build 2004) and the other (HP Pavilion 7th Gen i3, 8GB, 500GB Spindle Drive) was here in our shop just to perform updates for a client who lives in the bush that has satellite internet, I foolishly downloaded and installed the new version of Edge after it was done performing all the Windows updates and was also on Win 10 feature build 2004.  As soon as I completed the install the computer basically became nearly unresponsive because the hard drive utilization is pegged at 100% even though it isn't doing anything.  Additionally, good luck trying to uninstall any apps or updates, because getting to any Windows settings is virtually impossible.  Interestingly, when I was finally able to get CCleaner from Piriform installed on the customers computer via USB flash drive and did a custom clean in the default settings followed by the registry repair option the problem was resolved.  It's too bad it took me hours of trying everything under the sun from restore points to trying to have Windows 10 repair itself, literally nothing worked.  Since I just completely borked the second computer, I'll update with whether the CCleaner solution works a second time.  On another note... SERIOUSLY MICROSOFT????  THIS IS RIDICULOUS.  As if I could possibly hate the steaming pile of **** that Windows 10 Home is more than I already do.  I can tolerate pro and enterprise, but Home is hot garbage.

I too have this problem, Microsoft edge has always been slow at the initial load but recently it does not return the page at all. When I look at task manager everything is OK until I load Edge when the total disk utilisation goes to 100% (individual Edge tasks don't show that amount of usage) and effectively freezes the system to such a degree that I am forced to power off the pc manually. I have tried most of the ideas on posts on this site with no success. I would add there is definitely no shortage of disk space. I am now using internet explorer as my browser (Hopefully temporarily). I suspect that it is a recent Microsoft update that is causing the problem, but establishing which one is difficult. I am considering downloading and reinstalling Microsoft Edge or I see there is a Feature update to Windows 10 version 2004 and maybe trying that. Any suggestions Microsoft????

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Seems that you are facing 100% disk usage on your PC. In order to get clarity and to assist you accordingly, please reply with the answers to the questions below:

    • What is the Version and Build of Windows 10 installed on the PC? (Type winver in Windows search/Run command)
    • What is the Version of Edge installed?
    • When you say "100% disk usage problems with Microsoft Edge" do you have 100% disc usage issues when using Microsoft Edge or when using the PC?
    • What is the make and model of the PC?

In this scenario, we would suggest you to perform these methods and check if that helps.

Method 1: Clear browsing history and cached data

Your browser automatically saves temporary Internet files to help pages load faster. Clearing this cache will sometimes fix page display problems.

Open Microsoft Edge, select History > Clear history. Select Browsing history and Cached data and files, and then select Clear.

    Method 2: Reset Edge

    1. Open Microsoft Edge
    2. Click on the three dots (…) from the right top corner.
    3. Select Settings from the drop down and click on Reset settingsfrom the left pane.
    4. Select Restore settings to their default values.
    5. Relaunch Edge and check

**Disclaimer:**This will reset your startup page, new tab page, search engine, and pinned tabs. It will also disable all extensions and clear temporary data like cookies. You favorites, history and saved passwords will not be cleared.

Method 3: Check in Clean boot status

Try booting your PC in clean boot. Refer to the article on How to perform a clean boot in Windows

**Note:**Clean Boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program. Also, you may not be able to use some programs in clean boot.

If performing a clean boot fixes the issue then, please refer to the section How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean boot to check which program is causing the issue.

Note: Please refer the section Reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting to boot the computer in to normal mode after troubleshooting.

Let us know the results. If the issue persists, we will certainly assist you further.
