Microsoft Edge changed .xml to 'Microsoft Edge HTML Document' files. How can I change those back to .xml?

Hi all,

I have some data files that were originally .XML, and I could open them in a software that I use to process them. But, somehow, all the .XML files changed their file type to 'Microsoft Edge HTML Document', and I cannot open them in the software anymore.

I'd like to change the file type back to .XML. What app should I choose for 'default open app' to make the type back to .XML? Should I just delete Microsoft edge? This is a little annoying.. I'd appreciate it if you could help!

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

That just indicates XML files are set to open in Edge, what application do you want to open XML files with?

Right click and XML file and select properties, on the resulting dialog, is there a 'Change' button, is there is, select that button and using the resulting menus, can you set your preferred app to open XML files?

If not, please provide a screenshot of the Properties dialog.

What is the default.

Let me explain, I am using Blogger.com and the themes no longer work.

Before it looked like a piece of paper. Now it's the edge.xml with the icon. I am supper aggravated. Just got the sitemap.xml working for Google console. Took for ever to get working. Because I needed to add atom in the start... but no, the robots.txt did't show that. Now for some reason the xml is now in edge and nothing is uploading to the themes.

Downloaded notepad ++ set that as default, nope, tried notepad nope... still not working.

Reset the default in edge... with the 3 dots... nope.... this is probably really simple and I am over thinking it but should the default not be notepad?

Hi Dave,

Many thanks for your response. The software that I use is 'NanoScope Analysis' from Bruker, which is not common. The files are my research data collected using a specific instrument and the software from the company. So, there's no specific application I can find in the list of apps. Is there any way to solve this problem? What I can think of is going back to the status before Edge take over all .XML files to Edge file type (deleting Edge)..

Hi Jason_785,

On your PC locate where NanoScope Analysis is installed in and note down that location

Then right click any XML file and select Open With -choose another app.

Then work through the menus to find NanoScope Analysis, is you cannot find that software, on the second menu you will be given the option to search your PC for software, then navigate to find the NanoScope Analysis executable exe file and select that to set the file association on XML files.
