Event Viewer/Task Scheduler Error Message

I receive the error message "MMC could not create the snap-in" in both Event Viewer and Task Scheduler. I've tried various things including a reinstall of the .NET Framework and nothing seems to resolve the issue. Does anyone have any suggestions?

michiganjoe,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Answers community forum.

The first thing I would try is to run the System File Checker to see if any system files have gotten corrupted:

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.

Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue

At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

When the scan is complete, test to see whether the issue that you are experiencing is resolved.

If that does not work, we will need a little more information the better help you.  What version of Vista are you using?  When exactly does this error occur?  Is this something you are seeing in Event Viewer or do you get the error when you try to open Event Viewer and Task Scheduler?

Have any changes been made to your computer recently, such as new hardware or software installed or any updates / upgrades to any software or drivers?  Have you tried doing a system restore back to before the problem first showed up?

To restore the operating system to an earlier point in time, follow these steps:

Click Start, type system restore in the Start Search box, and then click System Restore in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.

In the System Restore dialog box, click Choose a different restore point, and then click Next.

In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue, and then click Next.

Click Finish.

The computer restarts, and the system files and settings are returned to the state that they were in at the time that the restore point was created.

Let us know the status of your issue and if we can provide further assistance.

Thank you,

Gloria

    Hi GLoria,

I am having this issue as well and thoroughly have researched this for a few wonderful days, lead on some paths to export the errors to a text file.

findstr /C:"[SR] Cannot repair member file" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >C:\Users[redacted}\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

That file was blank and still having the issues loading the Event Viewer MMC.

I recently had issues with .NET and placed a call into support to fix the updates that wouldn't install.  A complete roll back of .NET and reinstalled from the ground up finally allowed the patches to be installed.  I found I had a few other instances that were becoming buggy and I wanted to look in the event viewer for what they might be.  I haven't used the viewer in some time and a roll back to when it was work is a dart throwing contest because I can't recall the need to use it.  I have also learned of finding. mmc.exe.config related info, which my system does not have this fill in the sys32 directory.  Is this my issue and how do I recover/install/create this file when it's comes up MIA?

    Any help would be appreciated.
