First thing to establish is whether this is a hardware or software issue. Restart, go into the BIOS settings screen by pressing F2 or Del as appropriate. If the problem still shows here it's hardware related, and a repair is needed. Alternatively you could boot from a Windows or Linux CD and see how that displays.

If the methods I mention indicate that the hardware is OK, then investigate software issues.

A possible (inexpensive) hardware issue is a dislodged display connector on the mobo. Then again, the display itself may have a fault.

A backlight failure cannot cause the symptoms the OP lists.

How old is the Laptop and what make Model?

If it is under warranty try to take it back for the vendor to repair the LCD or Replace it!

Is scenario can be caused by CCFL or Inverter is defective. Basically theCCFL Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light or Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL ) is the light that light the screen from behind. Thefluorescent tube is normally located at the top of the screen in most models, and a bright reflective surface that distributes the light across the back of theLCD , so it can shine through the liquid crystals of the liquid crystal display, which only transmit red, green or blue (RGB) colours on the Screen.
