Are any devices malfunctioning? Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information. Open Components under System Summary and click on Problem Devices. Is anything listed there?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties, Hardware, and Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

To see Hidden Devices (Non Plug and Play Drivers) you need to select View, Show Hidden Devices. It is necessary to do this every time you open Device Manager if you need to see them.

A further complication can be Ghosted Devices –installed but not connected!

Hi Gerry. I'm not the original poster but I have the same problem. OS is XP. I'm donating this computer but I want to move photos to a cd first. I get the same "drive not accessable incorrect function" error. I went through your steps above. No devices are listed under problem devices, there are no yellow ?s. However, once I select device manager it lists numerous entries. When I click on show hidden devices, it's the same list with three additions: Intel Unified Graphics Drivers, Non plug and play drivers, and storage volume. I don't know if those three have anything to do with the problem of the computer not reading the CD-RW disk in the F drive (the drawer that opens says CD-RW so I wanted to make sure I inserted the correct disk). Any help would be appreciated from a fellow grandfather!
