Bluetooth Replace with dongle

The past few days I've been using a Bluetooth mouse with my laptop, and today the built-in Bluetooth inside the laptop quit working and in device manager there is a device saying "Invalid Device Descriptor."

Actually I don't mind if the internal Bluetooth quits working, but when I try to plug in a Bluetooth dongle into a USB port, it brings back the Bluetooth to the system tray, but when I have it try to find/attach to a device, it finds no devices.

I ran a troubleshooting of Windows...here is the print-out of it in a PDF

Thank you,

Isaac

P.S. I tried using a System Restore point pretty soon after the internal Bluetooth quit working, and it didn't fix it.

I also tried the Bluetooth dongle & mouse with another laptop and it's working good...so that is not the problem.

It's working now. I unplugged my Bluetooth Dongle and then uninstalled all the Generic Bluetooth Radio entries by going into the Device Manager and clicking on View -> Show hidden devices and then right clicking on all the entries I wanted to uninstall, and clicking uninstall. (I had multiple Generic Bluetooth Radio entries because I had tried using my dongle in multiple USB ports).

I also uninstalled my Mouse under the Bluetooth section in Device Manager.

Then Reboot twice (maybe once would have been enough, I'm not sure).

One strange thing that happened was that my internal Bluetooth device returned in the Device Manager (as Qualcomm Atheros AR3012 Bluetooth(R) Adapter)...it appeared to be functional, but I didn't try connecting anything; instead I disabled it immediately in the Device Manager by right clicking on it and clicking disable.

After than I did a Restart just to be safe.

Then I think I tried plugging in my Bluetooth Dongle. It installed and appeared in the Device Manager.

Then I tried connecting my Bluetooth mouse and it didn't work repeatedly, so I took out it's batteries for about a minute so that it would reset. Then tried it again and it worked.

Yay, I think in the future I will always disable internal Bluetooth in computers and just use a dongle...if the internal Bluetooth hadn't shown up in the device manager, I wonder if I would have been able to disable it at all. Whereas the Bluetooth dongles can always be unplugged so the computer ignores them.

Thanks for your help, I might not have kept trying to do stuff in the Device Manager if you hadn't suggested it.

Unfortunately, I cannot mark my post as the Answer...

If you have any other questions (or want some logs), just ask, I'll keep checking this thread for a few days.

Well...now I don't see the "unknown" device, not sure why that is...but I suppose that's good.

The Bluetooth dongle shows up as a Generic Bluetooth Radio in the Device Manager, and it has a little yellow exclamation point in its icon. Apparently it has this problem:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    {Operation Failed}

    The requested operation was unsuccessful.

I tried to uninstall it and reboot. But when I then go back into the manager it is no different. If I change which USB port it is plugged in, it doesn't change (although in the Properties of the device, I see the Location changes).

I do wonder if perhaps the driver in the driverstore is corrupt...and when I uninstall the device in Device Manager, it just keeps installing it from the driverstore...is there any way to uninstall it from the driverstore as well?

I ran the Troubleshooting again, and it gave this report - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/81847799/tmp/file____C__Users_Isaac_AppData_Local_ElevatedDiagnostics_332245(1).pdf

    Hi Isaac,

This issue can be caused by Bluetooth settings and drivers.

Let’s try the following methods and check if it helps.

    Method 1:

I would suggest you to check if the Wireless service (WLAN) and Bluetooth service is enabled refer the following steps.

Press Windows key + R and type services.msc in the search field and press ENTER.

    Method 2:

I would suggest you to reinstall the Bluetooth drivers and check if it helps.

    a. Press Windows Key+ R in the search box type devmgmt.msc and then press enter.

    b. In Device Manager, locate the device you want to uninstall, and then double-click the device name

    c. In the properties window, under Driver tab, click on Uninstall button.

    d. After the uninstalling the drivers restart the computer. This should automatically install proper drivers for it.

You may refer to the following article for more information: Why isn't Windows finding my wireless device?

Keep us posted on the status of the issue.
