left mouse button stuck

Hi all, hope you can help! My laptop (Acer Aspire E1-510) is relatively new with 8.1 installed. Very often when highlighting things or sometimes for no reason at all, my mouse (built in track pad buttons) starts highlighting everything and wherever i move it it just scrolls up and down. Similar to what it would do if i pressed and held the left mouse button down whilst moving the track pad only it does it by itself. This is not stopped when i try and left click as it will not click. This is not a sticky key issue as the track pad will not click either! the right click button works normally but the only way to get the left clicker working again is to wait it out (sometimes up to half an hour) or shut the lid of my laptop and wait for 2 min then restart. This has caused me to lose some unsaved work and it is happening VERY frequently now :(

HELP please!!

Hi, thanks for your response! The make/model is Acer Aspire E1-510 and the mouse i'm referring to is actually the buttons below the track pad on the laptop. I have run through method 1 and this issue is not fixed. I will try number 2 and let you know if it worked later. Because it is the built in mouse i am talking about, when it gets stuck, there is no other mouse to use. I find it funny that when it happens it affects not only the left mouse button but the track pad too which is why i thought it may be a software thing. Thanks for your input so far!

    Sarah

    Hi Sarah,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I can imagine the inconvenience experienced by you and will certainly help you in the right direction to fix the issue. However, I would appreciate if you could answer a few questions to narrow down the issue in order to provide you with better assistance.

    1. What is the make and model no. of the laptop and the external mouse?
    2. Does this mouse work fine with any other system?
    3. Did you try connecting another mouse and check if it works?

Check if the mouse works properly on another computer.

In order to diagnose and troubleshoot the issue, I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if the issue persists.

    Method 1:

I would suggest you to run “Hardware and Devices” troubleshooter to diagnose the exact issue.

Follow these steps to run the troubleshooter:

    a. Press “Windows key + W”.

    b. Type “Troubleshooting” without quotes in the Search box and hit enter.

    c. Select “Hardware and Sound” from the Troubleshooter Window.

    d. Select “Hardware and Devices” under Devices option.

    e. Follow the On Screen instructions.

If the issue still exists, try the next method.

    Method 2:

In order to rule out the possibility of a third party software intervention, I would suggest you to clean boot the system and check if the mouse works.

Putting your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.

***How to perform a clean boot in Windows***

Note: Refer "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.

    Additional information:

Mouse, touchpad, and keyboard problems in Windows

**Note:**The information provided in the above article also holds good for Windows 8/8.1 systems. The troubleshooting steps, however, differ for Windows 8/8.1.

Hope this information is helpful. Do let us know if you need any further assistance, we'll be glad to assist you.
