I am trying to open a doc file that I have created years ago. "Permission is restricted for this document. You must open this file with Microsoft Office 2003 or later or Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 or later.." How do I open this file? I have.a Mac 2013 but its software is updated for since spetember 2020.

i have the same question, i got that message with a .doc file when using something other than office to open it. opening it with office generates a popup that says "you are not signed in to office with an account that has permission to open this document. you may sign in a new account into office that has permission or request permission from email address" with options add account, request permission, cancel.
add account does nothing, signs me in and instantly brings popup back.
request permission has no change

What kind of file format are you trying to open in Office for Mac 2013?
Did this problem appear in all files or a specific file?
I suggest you check if the file is protected and you can try to send the file to Office for Windows desktop app. Then open it and re-save it as a new kind of file format.
