Hello,

I frequently use the Task Manager to watch the programs that are running on my computer and I see that there is a program that has caught my attention: "Sink to receive asynchronous callbacks for WMI client application."

What catches my attention first of all is that the word "Sink" is not properly used in the right context and second, just the name of the program does not "look" like an official program that Microsoft would install on their programs as is indicated in the picture that is inserted.  Is anyone familiar with this program?  Is this an official Microsoft program?  I do not run any programs that are extremely "third-party" that would list any sort of program of this nature.  If anyone can explain to me what this is, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

    Hi,

this process is used by some WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) tools to communicate with each other.

Deep technical details about this communication are described in https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deskto... and https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deskto...

So this is normal, no need to anxiety.

    Hi watkd2500

Rest assured this is a legitimate Windows process and it will not harm your PC . . .

unsecapp.exe or as it is described - Sink to receive asynchronous callbacks for WMI client application

That process is basically used in Windows for syncing actions like Windows Updates, Defender updates, basically any contact required with the Microsoft Servers . ..

The word "sink" is correct in this case. It is the opposite of "source". Here is the appropriate definition:

a body or process that acts as a storage device or disposal mechanism: such as

    a : HEAT SINK

broadly : a device that collects or dissipates energy (such as radiation)

b : a reactant with or absorber of a substance

forests are a sink for carbon dioxide

In other words. I is the collection point for Windows process data.

    Hi Watkd

In programming terms a sink is a buffer - it is an area in RAM set aside to receive and send data through so it is received in a constant stream . . .

    Dave,

It just seems odd that it would be spelled "Sink" instead of "Sync"...
