Default Image program

Hi,

For years I have used Irfan View as my default Image program but since I purchased a new Laptop with Windows 11 I can find no way to do that. The nearest I found is to make each file extension use Irfan view, As you can imagine, there are far too many files to do that.

So, is there a way I can make Irfan View my default Image program. I really do not like what it appears I'm stuck with......

Cheers,

Keith

    Hi David,

    Thanks for your tips but I'm afraid neither of which worked...😒

    As far as I can see there is no setting in Windows 11 (as there was in Win 10) to make a particular prog like Irfan View the default image program. I tried also setting the defaults in Irfan View itself (with admin privelidges) but again, no joy.

    Have we gone back to the days where Microsoft are forcing everyone to use their products, their way I wonder? It certainly appears so to me.

    It looks like I'll have to wait for the hacks to sort it out...😡

    I installed IrfanView and tried to reproduce the issue on my Windows 11.

    I also can't associate the files through the application itself. It seems that not even on Windows 10, this option works.

    In this case, changing the file association must be done through the Windows settings. But in Windows 11, there have been some changes to how this is done.

    1. Press "Windows + I" and select "Apps > Default apps";
    2. Under "Set defaults for applications", look for IrfanView and select it;
    3. Look for the type of file you want to change and select it;
    4. Select IrfanView from the list provided and click OK.

    Do the same procedure for the other types of files that you want to be opened by IrfanView.

    Yeah, I've tried that David but they still open with the default Windows 11 app David......?

    Another annoying thing is that in Windows Explorer all my image files just show the default icon (unless I save a new image it seems) no matter what setting I use from 'View' whereas in Win 10 and all previous versions I had a condensed image of the file itself, if you see what I mean?!

    By "condensed image of the file itself", you mean a thumbnail/miniature of the image, correct?

    I'm thinking the problem might be with your Windows user.

    Create a new local user with admin privileges. Then log out of your current user and log in to the new user and see if the same behavior occurs.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/cre...

    IrfanView will only be available on the new user if you checked to install it on all users. If you left it checked to install only on the current user, which is the default, the app will not be available on the new user, and you will have to install it for a test.

    In the new user, also see if the problem with the thumbnails of the images also occurs.

    Hi keithy397,

    I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

    I understand that you want to set Irfan View as your default image application.

    I've never used Irfan View, but I imagine it should be compatible with a wide range of files.

    The easiest way to make compatible file extensions open by default for it. Is to configure it directly from the application.

    Below is the answer related to this taken from the Frequently Asked Questions on the Irfan View website.

    Q: How can I set IrfanView as my default viewer?

    A: Start IrfanView, go to 'Properties->Extensions' and associate your types.

    NOTE: in newer Windows versions, you must start IrfanView in ADMIN mode to change file associations. Use right mouse click on IrfanView, use the "Run as admin" menu and verify. If still not working, use the System Settings (or Control Panel): Apps => Set Standard Apps => Photo Viewer (Set default program).

    I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions.
