    Hello kayfinch,

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

When you buy a computer, the pre-installed Windows system is actually tied to the motherboard. If you replace your motherboard, the Windows license you previously had will be lost with it.

For your current situation, the best solution is to contact the person who helped you replace your motherboard at the time and ask them to help you resolve this issue.

If there's anything that's not clear, don't hesitate to let me know.

    Sincerely,

    Hi kayfinch,

You and your son were able to upgrade to Windows 10 because it was a free upgrade, so you were able to use Windows 10 without replacing your motherboard. But the free upgrade is now over, so if your current motherboard is Windows 8. 1, you may need to replace it.

However, there is still only one possible way you can try to enable you to upgrade to Windows 10 again.

First you can download the Windows 10 ISO file from this site and then refer to the steps in this article to see if you can activate Windows 10.

Reactivating Windows after a hardware change (microsoft.com)

If the above method still doesn't work, then you may just not be able to continue using Windows 10.

I hope the above method will work for you.

    Sincerely,

    Hi kayfinch,

If you need to replace your motherboard, it may be a better option to contact your computer manufacturer, who should help you replace it with a suitable one.

Also, as we said before, since Windows is pre-installed in the motherboard, if you change the motherboard, your system transfer will change with it. Currently, if you want to upgrade back to Windows 10, you still need to replace your motherboard again.

    Sincerely,
