I have just installed Office for Mac 2011.  In outlook i am able to send out messages but get an error message when trying to receive messages.  The error message reads "Authentication failed because Outlook doesn't support any of the available authentication methods.  Details: Could not retrieve mail. Account name: "Rogers"  where Rogers is my mail server.  Error code is 17897.

All the settings are correct according to my mail server.  Any solution for this problem??

I had exactly the same problem - what worked in the end was to **de-select** "Always use secure password" (despite my email provider telling me I needed it selected).

Other settings (which may or may not be relevant, but some may find them helpful)...

SSL selected

port 993

Hope this helps

Just replied about how helpful SpeedyWombat's post is.  For others, what worked was SpeedyWombat's first suggestion:  *de-select** "Always use secure password".

Had this problem but found the same solution as SpeedyWombat - only select "Use SSL" for both incoming and outgoing servers  and no other option. Outlooked worked correctly after that - but slowly.

what's funny about this issue .. as you look at this thread one reply says

:I had exactly the same problem - what worked in the end was to **de-select** "Always use secure password" (despite my email provider telling me I needed it selected).

and then: Had this problem but found the same solution as SpeedyWombat - only select "Use SSL" for both incoming and outgoing servers  and no other option. Outlooked worked correctly after that - but slowly.

I suspect you either have a subtle typo somewhere that's not easy to spot, such as a trailing space somewhere in your user information, or that you're trying to use SSL when you shouldn't. Or are you trying to use a custom port with SSL?
