I have two documents containing tables where the "updated" table has one column more than the "original" table. The "updated" table was created by editing the "original" table. On corresponding lines of the two tables, some of the cells contain changed wording, and some of the cells contain the original wording.
I would like to use the merge and track changes feature to specifically mark the wording in the "updated" table that is different from the wording in the "original" table. When I try this, I am getting a markup that indicates all of the content of all of the cells are changed from the "original" to the "updated" table. However, I can see that ALL of the original wording was, in fact, not changed.
Is there any way to accomplish what I am trying to accomplish. Or is this not within the capability of Word to do? If it can be done, please explain how?

Thank you for the response, but this really does not answer my question. The link provides general guidance for the merge and compare function, which I understand fairly well.
My specific question/issue involves using the merge and compare function when the documents are tables. When I follow the guidance at the link, entire table cells are marked as changed, althought only one letter in one word in the cell may actually be changed. I would like only the changed letter or the word that it is in (for example) to be marked, not the entire cell
I have used a work-around of converting the table to text, doing the merge and compare in the text file, then reconverting the text back to a table. This actually worked reasonably well, but with some errors related to whether the text in cells contained paragraph marks or not..
I was asking whether Word supports the kind of merge and compare of tables that I am describing in the original question, where only the changed word -- not the changed cell -- is marked. Or is my goal simply not consistent with the features of Word?
