List column type for attachments?

Hi all!

Before I start, I do know you can add an attachment to a list item.

I am wondering if it is possible to add multiple attachments like a pdf or word doc to their own individual, respective columns within one list item.

To clarify, here is my situation: each item added to this list has a "Quote" and "Invoice" associated with it, and these are external files, i.e. pdfs. Then of course other column data. I will then run an approval workflow on each item added.

What's the best way to go about this?

Hi Grace,

Thanks for your updates. Based on your description, you would like to add attachments in 2 columns in SharePoint List. It is not feasible to achieve it. There is no attachment column type in SharePoint lists. You can try the following:

1.    Use InfoPath. In an InfoPath form you can add an attachment field that allows a user to embed their attachment in the form (doesn't go to a SharePoint column, would need to open the InfoPath form to view the attachment).

2.    Use a document library.

Given this situation, we welcome and encourage you to share your ideas through SharePoint User Voice. Your providing feedback is the best way to perfect our products and services.

We appreciate your understanding.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I ended up using a document library for the attachments, and having two lookup column in the main list that point to those attachments.

    Thank you for the reply.

I know attachments can be added, but I want to be able to add two attachments to one item in 2 separate columns, if possible.

Does that make sense? A bit hard to explain!

    Hi GraceL1298,

We can add the attachments manually to the items of the SharePoint list. To dot that:

In the classic UI, open the SharePoint list>Check the item>Under ITEMS, click Attach File. We can attach files one by one.

In the new UI, open the SharePoint list>Check the item>Click Edit>Click Add attachments to add files. We need to add files one by one.

If anything is misunderstood, please let us know.

    Thanks,

    Felix
