I am trying to access shared documents to make edits within Word or Excel, however I keep on receiving the error, "You'll need the internet for this. We couldn't connect to one of the services we needed to sign you in. Please check your connection and try again" and I cannot edit the document in Office and I can only edit shared documents through the online web browser.

Hi TRANGTHOMASY,

Accoridng to your description, you cannot edit Word or Excel files in local Word or Excel clients but you can edit online.

Following are some suggestions for you:

  1. Some users have the same issue and the proxy or firewall setting is the problem, please disable those settings to see the result.
  2. Change a network connection or run the Internet connections troubleshooter to check if there is an error of your network: Type troubleshoot on search bar> Internet Connections> Run the troubleshooter.
  3. Running the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant for Office 365 to see if the issue persists.

If the suggestions above don’t work for you, to better understand your situation and provide help for you, please confirm the information below:

  1. Did you get the error message after you clicked the Edit in Word/Excel? Please provide the steps to get the error message and capture a screenshot of the error message itself to share with us.
  2. Have you activated your Office local clients? Please Provide your Office product name and version according to this article: What version of Office am I using?
  3. Did you use the same Office 365 account to sign in SharePoint Online and Office local clients?
  4. What troubleshooting steps have you completed? Are there any pending updates that need to be installed on your device?
  5. Please check and confirm the information in Private Message.

Note: Please remove your private information from your screenshots.

Best Regards,

Gloria

I performed each of the troubleshooting steps and none of them worked until I read the question: "Are there any pending updates that need to be installed on your device?" And lo and behold I had a pending notification stating there was something wrong/error with one of my "Accounts." So I clicked on the link/tab and was directed to my computer Settings>Email & App Accounts. There, I was prompted to resign in to my Microsoft Office 365 Account. I had reset my password a couple months back on the direct site, but don't believe I ever reset my password in my computer account settings. Once I updated my password under "Accounts used by other apps," I was able to access my documents online and edit my document through my computer Office programs and no longer received the error code. Thank you.
