Adding an object as pictogram

Please, someone help me. I am trying to add an object (a different word-document) as a pictogram. I don't want the whole document inside the other document, I just want to add a pictogram as the link to the whole document which opens in a different tab. Like usual! Because I've used this feature before. But... now it seems like I can't add a pictogram. Every time I click on add object, select "add as pictogram" and then select the file, it pastes the first page of the document I wanted to add in my original document. Why is it doing that?? I also just updated to the latest version, so that should be fine. I just want a small pictogram, not the whole first page. I have a MacBook Air 2020, with the latest Word version (16.95.1), like I said. hopefully someone can help me out...

It's true now. Microsoft has recently changed how Insert>Object>From File works.

If that feature is important to you, you can uninstall Office for Mac by following these steps: Uninstall Office for Mac Then reinstall an earlier version from this page: Update history for Microsoft 365 Apps After activating the software, immediately choose Help>Check for Updates and uncheck the option to Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date. Otherwise, Office will reinstall the latest version.

You can let Microsoft know about this issue by choosing Help>Feedback>Report a problem.

I'm not sure this is an intentional change, John. As you noted, new Word files can be inserted as icons. However, existing Word & Excel files still can be embedded as icons in Excel & PPt. Do you have any insights on why only this one aspect was affected?

Thanks for your reply. But that isn't true. I have done this many times before, adding an existing document as an icon. Even a few weeks ago, this worked perfectly fine. But all of a sudden, this seems to not work anymore. It only pastes the first page of the document, instead of the icon. Hopefully someone can help me out why it does this all of the sudden...

I'm able to reproduce this here running the same version of Mac Office on Sequoia [15.3.2]. The feature will embed new objects as icons but will not do so for existing documents.

Please use Help> Feedback to report the issue to the development team & include a link to this thread.

Word for Mac cannot add existing objects as icons. The Display as icon option appears only in the dialog when creating a new file. You can create a new Word file and paste in the contents of your other document. Close that and it will continue to display as an icon.
