How do I insert a check mark symbol in an Excel spreadsheet? In the Insert menu symbol is grayed out

    The Symbol feature is only active when in Edit or Enter mode. You can use the Emoji & Symbols feature in the Edit menu, though. However, that only provides a static check mark character.

    If you actually want a clickable check box you need to use the tool on the Insert tab or the check box form field on the Developer tab, depending on the purpose.

    I don't have a Mac myself, but perhaps my symbol icon is greyed out and i cannot access any symbols explains it.

    Try copy/pasting this into a cell: ✔

    That solved my immediate problem, but why is the symbol option grayed out in the Insert menu?
