System Freezing - Missing Windows Driver Framework (User-Mode Driver Framework) and wudfsvc.dll

My Windows Home addition is freezing on a regular basis and need to force a power off to resolve. In working with the errors shown in the event viewer and with CoPilot, I am missing the Windows Driver Framework and wudfsvc.dll file. Nothing CoPilot has guided me to works to restore these files or correct the freezing. The only next step is a complete reinstall of windows but the challenge is that my computer freezes during backups and they don't complete. Is there another way to resolve this or get a secure copy of this file that I can manually install. It is not included in ISO files.

    Hi,

Thanks for the details, that really helps clarify the situation. Since the freezes are random and affect core operations like browsers and File Explorer, it strongly indicates that the missing Windows Driver Framework (wudfsvc.dll) is causing system instability. At this point, a full reinstall of Windows Home is likely the most reliable solution. The main benefit of a full install here is that it completely restores all missing or corrupted system files, including core drivers like wudfsvc.dll, and resets Windows to a clean, stable state. This avoids patching individual files manually (which can be risky and often incomplete) and eliminates any hidden corruption that may be causing your random freezes. Essentially, it gives you a stable, fully functional system that should no longer experience the crashes caused by the missing framework.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Richard,

The Windows Driver Framework (wudfsvc.dll) is a core system component, so if it’s missing or corrupted, Windows may become unstable. Instead of a full reinstall right away, try running DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth followed by sfc /scannow in an elevated Command Prompt, these tools repair or replace damaged system files from Windows’ local cache or online sources. If that doesn’t help, you can try doing an in-place upgrade repair using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant, this reinstalls Windows without deleting apps or files. If your system still freezes before finishing, boot into Safe Mode with Networking first and run the installer from there to minimize driver conflicts. Were your freezes happening mostly after startup, or randomly while working on specific tasks?

    Kind regards,
