To change a payment method when the current credit card number is no longer valid, replace it with a new payment method rather than trying to edit the card number.
For a Microsoft 365 subscription billed to a Microsoft account (home use):
- Go to the Payment options page: https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments and sign in.
- Find the existing payment method and add a new card instead of changing the number.
- After adding the new card, set it as the payment method for the Microsoft 365 subscription.
- When the subscription is successfully using the new card, remove the old, invalid card from your payment options.
Notes based on Microsoft billing behavior:
- Card numbers on an existing payment method cannot be changed; a different payment method must be added and used instead.
- Name, billing address, and expiration date can be edited on an existing card, but not the card number.
If the subscription is managed through a Microsoft 365 business/enterprise account (admin center):
- Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Open Bills & payments and then the Payment methods tab.
- Use More actions (…) on the old card to add/replace with a new payment method.
- Move active subscriptions to the new payment method, then delete the old one.
If there are issues adding the new card (for example, card not accepted), ensure the card is issued in the same country/region as the tenant and contact the bank if it continues to be declined.
