Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could advise on which Microsoft 365 plan would be most suitable for an organisation set up as a CIC (Community Interest Company).

Are there any specific benefits available to CICs, or would we be eligible for the Microsoft 365 Nonprofit plan?

    Hello @Amaan Luqman,

    Thank you for your question.

I’d like to clarify that Community Interest Companies (CICs) are not automatically eligible for nonprofit benefits based solely on their legal structure. Eligibility for Microsoft 365 Nonprofit plans is determined through the Microsoft for Nonprofits validation process and depends on factors such as your organization’s mission, supporting documentation, and nonprofit status, as assessed by Microsoft’s validation partner.

If your organization is approved through this process, you may gain access to discounted or grant‑based Microsoft 365 plans.

To determine whether your CIC qualifies, I recommend starting with an eligibility pre‑check via the Microsoft for Nonprofits portal. This is the only way to confirm eligibility, as it can vary by organization and by region .

If your CIC is not approved as a nonprofit, you can still choose from the standard Microsoft 365 for Business plans, which are commonly used by small to medium‑sized organizations, such as: Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Microsoft 365 Business Standard, Microsoft 365 Business Premium. These plans can be selected based on your operational needs and budget.

You can review and compare them here: Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing | Microsoft 365

I hope this helps clarify your available options. Please let me know if you’d like guidance on comparing specific plans or anything else.

    Kind regards,

For a Community Interest Company (CIC), the “most suitable” Microsoft 365 plan depends on whether the organization qualifies for Microsoft’s nonprofit program and what capabilities are required.

    1. Plan options if treated as a standard business
      • If the CIC is not approved as a nonprofit, it can use any standard Microsoft 365 for business plan, for example:
        • Microsoft 365 Business Basic – cloud services (Exchange email, Teams, OneDrive, web/mobile apps).
        • Microsoft 365 Business Standard – adds full desktop apps plus email, Teams, and 1 TB OneDrive per user.
        • Microsoft 365 Business Premium – Business Standard plus advanced security and device management.
      • These plans are designed for small and medium organizations and include email, Teams, and Office apps as needed. See the overview and chooser here: Microsoft 365 for business and the plan chooser in Help me find the right plan for my business.
    2. Eligibility for Microsoft 365 Nonprofit plans
      • Microsoft for Nonprofits offers grants and discounted pricing on Microsoft 365 and other products to eligible nonprofit organizations.
      • The program includes discounted/nonprofit versions of Microsoft 365 (for example, Business Basic, Business Standard, E1/E3/E5) and related benefits such as Azure credits, Dynamics 365 discounts, Power Platform, and security tools.
      • Eligibility and availability vary by country/region, and approval is handled through the Microsoft for Nonprofits program, not automatically based on legal form.
      • To determine whether a CIC qualifies, the organization must:
        • Go to the Nonprofit Hub and run the eligibility pre-check.
        • Register the tenant and submit required information for review.
        • After approval, nonprofit offers (including Microsoft 365 nonprofit plans) can be claimed and managed in the Nonprofit Hub.
    3. Specific benefits if approved as a nonprofit If the CIC is approved under Microsoft for Nonprofits, it can access:
      • Microsoft 365 and Copilot at nonprofit grant/discount pricing.
      • Azure credits (for example, an annual Azure grant).
      • Discounts on Dynamics 365 and Power Platform.
      • Security and compliance tools, and other nonprofit-focused offers (GitHub, LinkedIn, hardware/software donations, and marketing support).
    4. Practical next steps
      • Decide what is needed functionally (desktop apps vs web-only, email/Teams, security features).
      • Visit the Nonprofit Hub to run the eligibility pre-check for the CIC and, if eligible, complete registration.
      • If approved, compare Microsoft 365 nonprofit offers (Business Basic, Business Standard, E1/E3/E5) to choose the right mix.
      • If not approved, select from the standard Microsoft 365 for business plans (Business Basic, Standard, or Premium) using the plan chooser.
