Are you currently locked out of Windows by a blue screen asking for a Bitlocker Recovery Key?

If so, if your drive is encrypted with Bitlocker, the only place the Bitlocker Recovery key is automatically stored is on the associated Microsoft account on the link below, be sure to check any Microsoft account that may have been used on the PC and also any work or school account that may be linked to the PC.

(Note, even if your device does not show on the Microsoft account, the Bitlocker Recovery Key may still be available on this link)

Are you able to find the Bitlocker Recovery Key on any account that may have been used or linked to the laptop?

If not, do you have a safe backup of your files, or use a cloud service like OneDrive to sync your files online.

BitLocker is built into Windows, but it is only available on specific editions and is managed differently depending on whether the device is personal or work/school managed.

To get and use BitLocker on a personal/home device:

  1. Check Windows edition:
    • BitLocker Drive Encryption is only available on Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Education editions. It is not available on Windows Home.
    • If the device is running Windows Home, upgrading to Windows Pro is required before BitLocker Drive Encryption can be used.
  2. Open BitLocker management (on Pro/Enterprise/Education):
    1. Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
    2. From Start, type BitLocker and select Manage BitLocker from the results.
    3. The BitLocker Drive Encryption window will list:
      • Operating system drive (where Windows is installed)
      • Fixed data drives
      • Removable data drives (BitLocker To Go)
  3. Turn on BitLocker for a drive:
    1. In BitLocker Drive Encryption, next to the drive to encrypt, select Turn on BitLocker.
    2. Choose how the drive will be unlocked (for example, with a password or TPM-based protection).
    3. Back up the BitLocker recovery key when prompted. The recovery key is a unique 48-digit numerical password used to unlock the drive if normal unlock methods fail.
    4. Start encryption. Encryption can take some time, but the device can usually be used while it runs.
  4. If the device is work/school managed:
    • BitLocker is often configured and enforced by the organization’s IT department. In that case, contact the company’s IT support to enable or manage BitLocker, or to obtain a recovery key if needed.

BitLocker protects data by encrypting the entire drive so that, if the drive is removed and connected to another device, it cannot be read without the decryption key.
